How we make money

Smart Home Energy is a free tool. We don't charge you anything to use it. Here's how we keep the lights on.

We earn a commission when you switch

If you find a better tariff through us and click “Switch now”, we earn a one-off commission from your new supplier. The amount varies by supplier and is paid to us by them — not added to your bill.

Who pays us and how much

These are the suppliers we currently have commission arrangements with, and what they pay us per electricity switch:

SupplierCommission per electricity switch
E.ON Next£28
Octopus Energy£50

We're in the process of adding more suppliers. This page is the source of truth — if a supplier isn't listed here, we don't earn a commission when you switch to them.

Does this affect which tariff we recommend?

No. Our calculation engine ranks tariffs by how much they'll save you, not by how much we earn. A few specifics so you can check our work:

What we compare

We compare domestic electricity tariffs from the following suppliers:

We do not compare gas tariffs. Most UK households are on dual fuel, but the switching and optimisation opportunity for EV, heat pump, solar, and battery households is almost entirely on the electricity side — which is where we focus.

We don't claim to cover every tariff in the market. We're not accredited to the Ofgem Confidence Code. If you want a whole-of-market view, the Citizens Advice comparison tool is a good independent starting point: energycompare.citizensadvice.org.uk.

What we don't do

Product recommendations

When we recommend a product (like a smart EV charger or a home battery), we may earn an affiliate commission from the retailer or manufacturer. We'll label these clearly as product recommendations, separate from the tariff comparison. We only recommend products we believe genuinely save money or improve your setup for your specific usage pattern — not whatever pays us the most.
